e7 Galapagos / San Cristobal Wind Power Project

Galapagos

Project type: Renewable energy - wind power
Host country: Ecuador
Location: Municipality of San Cristobal, El Progreso, Cerro El Tropezón, Galapagos province
Project owner: Eolica San Cristobal S.A. EOLICSA
Our involvement: The project is a partnership among the Government of Ecuador, the United Nations Foundation and the San Cristobal Wind Project Commercial Trust. The settlers of the Commercial Trust are member companies of the e7, an initiative of the world's leading power utilities for sustainable energy to which belong RWE, our parent company. RWE is the CDM project participant on behalf of e7 and one of the partner companies that has developed and implements this project.
Brief project description: By the summer of 2007, three wind power plants, each rated at 800 kilowatts, will have been set up on San Cristobal, one of the Galapagos islands. Renewables-based electricity will thus be introduced to the Galapagos archipelago within the scope of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP). The wind farm will replace some 50 percent of the electricity previously generated by combusting diesel oil. It will thus reduce CO2 emissions, while mitigating the risk to the ecosystem arising from the transportation of diesel oil.
Project status: Validation
Emission reduction start: September 1st, 2007
Crediting period: 7 years, renewable
Average annual PDD volume: 2,850 t CO2e/year
Total estimated reductions (PDD): 19,948 tCO2e
Project design document (PDD): available for download here
